About Our Dry Transfers:
Our custom and off-the-shelf dry transfers, also known as rub down
transfers or rub-ons, are self-adhesive ink image which are released from their
plastic carrier film by pressure, without the addition of water or another liquid
solvent. There are three layers to our dry transfers. Top is the clear, semi-rigid
carrier film which holds the transfer prior to application. Next is the ink layer
or layers. Lastly, the ink image is coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
The ink can be in virtually any colour of your choice, including several
whites and metallics. It can be translucent or opaque and we regularly make transfers
with six different colours in register. Our dry transfers are applied by positioning
on the model and rubbing down through the carrier film. On application, the carrier
film releases from the dry transfer, leaving only the required ink image adhering
to the sub-strate. There is no residual shiny carrier film nor infill left between
the characters to spoil your model's appearance, as there would be with a water-slide
decal.
Most of our dry transfers are made to the
customer's own specification, using either artwork from our library or characters
specially created for the transfer. We have designed artwork templates for
the more popular transfers, such as numbers for ready-to-run locomotives or reporting
marks for USA freight cars. We do not carry large stocks of our off-the-shelf
transfers in order to keep our costs to a minimum. We find that it is often more
efficient and cost-effective to make a custom transfer comprising only the required
characters.
