African Earth Moving Equipment. In the early 1970s I was working on the construction of Cape Town's Foreshore Freeway when the circus came to town. The construction company allowed the circus to paddock their elephant on an un-used portion of the site and we were surveying nearby when the company's photographer turned up to take the publicity photos....

Part of the South African Railways' tender drawings for the construction of Ermelo Station on the
Richards Bay Coal Line. Even the reduced-size tender drawing was a couple of metres long. The steam locomotive depot
shown on the plan must have been one of the last main line steam depots built outside of China and possibly India.

GMA and train at Ncwadi, early 1970s. Ncwadi is on the line from Pietermaritzburg to Donnybrook and Franklin.
I didn't keep details of the locos and trains, but if I remember correctly, this was one of two Pietermaritzburg-bound trains which crossed a south-bound train here. The 'c' in Ncwadi is a click made in the front of the mouth, the nearest western equivalent being a click of annoyance (Photo: Peter Blackham) |

Umzinto shed, early 1970s. The Garratt on the train
in the background is about to leave for Highflats or Ixopo, whilst the one
in the foreground is being made ready for work. From left to right the
personnel are: a labourer looking out of the photo; at the gate is a fireman
discussing a new motor bike with his friends; then there is a guard walking
across the tracks with hands on his hips and farthest right is a driver
coming back to his engine. (Photo: Peter Blackham) |

Izingolweni Station 23 December 1973. The loco at the
coaling stage had arrived 5 minutes before with the early morning train from
Harding. The train pulling forward into the station is from Port
Shepstone. Its guard is in conference with the station master (foreground)
and its fireman is acting as shunter. The Port Shepstone engine shunted the
station before swapping trains. Each engine returned with train to its home
station. (Photo: Peter Blackham) |
